Why this matters
ChatGPT reached roughly 900 million weekly users in early 2026 (OpenAI, via Deepak Gupta). Yet an index of 1,004 businesses found 65.9% were not mentioned in AI search at all (MentionLayer, via Xpand Digital). Getting named is now a competitive advantage in its own right.
No one can guarantee what ChatGPT says. But these steps reliably improve your odds.
The 10-step checklist
1. Test where you stand
Write 20–50 questions your buyers actually ask, such as “best physiotherapy clinic in Arera Colony” or “GST software for small traders”. Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Record who gets named and which sources are cited.
2. Let AI search crawlers in
Check robots.txt, your CDN and any security plugin. ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot; blocking it keeps you out of those results. Our crawler setup guide covers each bot.
3. Make your identity unambiguous
Use the same business name, address, phone and description on your site, Google Business Profile and directories. Add Organization schema with links to your official profiles.
4. Rewrite key pages answer-first
Open each service page with a two-sentence answer: what you do, for whom, where. Use headings that mirror real questions.
5. Publish specific facts
Prices or price ranges, service areas, years in business, certifications, turnaround times. AI engines prefer quotable specifics over adjectives.
6. Create honest comparison content
“Best for” and “X vs Y” pages that fairly describe alternatives tend to be cited, and they let you shape how you are compared.
7. Be indexed beyond Google
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools too. Microsoft Copilot relies on Bing’s index, and several other assistants use more than one search source.
8. Earn reviews and mentions where AI looks
Look at the sources cited in step 1. If ChatGPT keeps citing Practo, a local news site or a G2 category page, that is where you need to be.
9. Keep content fresh and dated
Show a visible “last updated” date and update pages when facts change. Outdated prices are a common reason AI describes a business wrongly.
10. Measure monthly
Re-run the same prompts every month. Google Analytics added a native AI Assistant channel in May 2026 (Passionfruit), so you can see AI-referred visits without custom setup.
How long does it take?
Steps 2–5 are typically picked up within four to eight weeks by engines that browse the live web. Steps 6–8 build over three to six months.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT's answers are not sold as placements. Visibility comes from being a credible, well-described source.
Does ChatGPT use Google results?
OpenAI does not publish full details of its search sources. Treat Google, Bing and strong third-party sites as all worth investing in.
What if ChatGPT says something wrong about my business?
Find the sources it relies on, correct your own pages and listings, add clear facts, and re-test monthly.
