The short answer
SEO (search engine optimisation) helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) shapes your content so search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from it. GEO (generative engine optimisation) makes your brand a source that AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name, cite and recommend when they write an answer.
All three chase the same outcome — being found when a buyer is looking — but they work at different points in the journey.
What SEO does
SEO is the foundation. It covers whether search engines can crawl and index your site, whether your pages match what people search for, and whether other sites trust you enough to link to you. The output is a ranking: your page appears as one of the links on a results page.
SEO still matters enormously. Google organic search sends far more traffic than AI assistants do today, and many AI systems draw on pages that already rank well.
What AEO does
AEO focuses on the answer, not the link. It structures content so a system can extract a clean, correct response: a direct answer near the top of the page, headings that mirror real questions, short definitions, comparison tables and FAQ blocks with matching schema markup.
AEO shows up in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, voice assistants and the “quick answer” part of chatbot responses.
What GEO does
GEO is about reputation inside AI answers. When someone asks “which CA firm in Bhopal is best for startups?”, a generative engine writes a short answer and names a few businesses. GEO is the work of making yours one of them, and making sure it is described accurately.
That depends on more than your own website. AI models weigh what the wider web says about you: reviews, directory listings, news coverage, comparison articles and community discussions.
Side by side
| Dimension | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page | Have an answer extracted | Be named and cited in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Blue links | AI Overviews, snippets, voice | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, AI Mode |
| Main levers | Crawlability, relevance, links | Answer-first formatting, schema | Brand mentions, reviews, accurate facts across the web |
| Main metric | Rankings, organic sessions | Answer ownership | Share of voice, citations, AI-referred leads |
How they fit together
Think of three layers. SEO makes sure you can be found and trusted. AEO makes your best information easy to quote. GEO builds the outside evidence that convinces an AI to recommend you. Skip the bottom layer and the top two have little to stand on.
An agency that cannot do classic SEO well cannot do AI SEO well either. Ask any provider to show you a recent technical audit before you discuss GEO.
Which do you need first?
- New or weak website: start with SEO. Fix crawling, speed, page structure and your Google Business Profile.
- You rank, but AI never mentions you: add AEO formatting to your top pages, then begin GEO work on reviews and mentions.
- Local business: AEO plus consistent listings (Google, Justdial, Practo, IndiaMART) often moves fastest.
- SaaS or national brand: GEO matters early, because buyers ask AI to compare vendors before they visit any site.
Three common myths
- “GEO replaces SEO.” It does not. It sits on top of it.
- “You need special AI-written content.” AI engines reward clear, specific, well-sourced content — the same qualities people value.
- “Adding llms.txt gets you cited.” It is a cheap, sensible addition, but no major engine has confirmed it changes rankings or citations.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as AI SEO?
Mostly. AI SEO is the umbrella term; GEO is the part focused on being cited and recommended by generative AI models. Most agencies, including us, use AI SEO to mean GEO plus AEO plus the SEO they rely on.
Do I need separate agencies for SEO and GEO?
No, and it is usually better not to. The work overlaps heavily, and one team can prioritise across all three layers.
Which is fastest to show results?
AEO fixes on pages that already rank can show within weeks. GEO gains depend on outside mentions and usually take three to six months.
